About

Matoria is a London-based pop artist and storyteller.

Matoria’s music is a raw and personal exploration of queerness, mental health and the journey back to oneself. In her songs, she reflects on the pressures of living as a woman in her twenties, and the relatable urge to find, fix and reinvent the self, all at the same time. Though she has written songs since she was a child, as an adult she turned to songwriting during a transformative chapter in her life, when she faced the grief of losing her father to suicide, coupled with the intensity of completing a PhD in cancer research.

Lucky, her first single, is a story about infatuation - the precariousness of almost losing yourself to the insanity of it all, and the final realisation that the figure holding your attention was just lucky to be your fleeting muse. Masquerader, her second single, is a song about taking off the rose-coloured glasses and seeing someone for who they really are.

Growing up aware of her queerness in a deeply religious environment was a complex and painful journey. Matoria was born in Venezuela and grew up across Australia, the US, and the UK; she speaks English, Spanish, French, and some Swedish. Embracing these roots are core to her music’s engagement with themes of identity and connection.

She draws inspiration from storytellers like Taylor Swift, Paris Paloma, Gracie Abrams, Caroline Rose, and Lola Young.
